Please help me Identify my Dad's Bow...
« on: May 02, 2012, 04:59:26 pm »
Hello Everyone!

My dad was given a bow about 30 years ago and he was told that it was very old and from Europe. After doing a bit of research, I figured it may be and English Warbow?
I also found this site and thought perhaps you experts could help me out. I have included a few pics for your viewing that may be helpful. I also have more.
If any members have info on this bow,I would really appreciate your feedback. My dad asked me to find out whatever I could about his treasured bow.
Thank you for your time and interest. Have a great day!

PS: Well i can't include the pics because they are to big I think. If someone is interested in helping me out with my dad's bow you can email me and I will send you pics through there.      belyndabr@gmail.com

Most of us open an account with Photobucket and create photo albums there.  Once you have posted the pics on Photobucket they are re-sized automatically.  From there it isn't impossible to get them posted in your threads here.

Thanks Marc, I was hoping some of the more computer savvy among us could help.

I can't wait to see pictures of this bow!

The suspense is getting to much  ;D I doubt very much it is a warbow (99.9%) but certainly an older Victorian Laminate.

I emailed Flitter the other day these are the images he sent me.

I for one don't have much of an idea, it's not a warbow but certainly looks old. The black covering is not something I have ever seen in a bow like this before. Any ideas.....

im guessing maybe an old target style longbow, and im guessing the black covering might be a tar or resin of some kind to water proof it? just my guess, what we need is someone to analyse it in person
warbows and fishing, what else is there to do?

a lot of old timers in 1800 and early 1900s would use beeswax on wood....I bought a mantle clock from pre-WWII in europe that was nearly black.  Stripped it all off and it had beautiful highly figured black walnut case under all that.  told by clock repair guy it was beeswax that built up over the years mixed with dust, dirt, and smoke from fireplaces and stoves.

definitely looks old.....congrats

Are there any marks on it around the grip area?  You may have to look close while under a strong light.

Hi again folks,

Thanks Ian for putting the pics on for me. They look great! I am not sure if there are any marks on the handle;however,I do have more pics that r close up of the handle. Unfortunately, I can't see the bow in person because my dad lives in Newfoundland and I live in Nova Scotia. Lol. I did mention to him to check it over in good light in the hopes that he may find a mark of some kind....waiting to hear back from him, then I will let you all know what he found.

Your right, it certainly does look like it has been either dipped or covered with something to protect it. Also, dad said that on both ends he was told that they were possibly rhino horn??

Again, I will let you all know what I find out and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks again....Flitter(Lindy)

you might try moving this to the bows section because more people will see it there, more people means more feedback   :)
