can u just peal the bark off blk. walnut and let that be the back or do u have to chase a ring?

The sapwood right underneath the bark is just fine!
Unless you're after the beautiful heartwood; in that case you would have to go deeper to get some of that dark heartwood in the limbs.

so you could knock the bark off after it dries like hickory and use the under layer (Cambium) for the back ring?
