Osage Pyramid Bow
« on: April 15, 2012, 07:26:34 pm »
Hi, All,

I've been out of action for a good while, but thankfully back to tillering.  I just finished this one and I'm reasonably happy with it, so here 'tis.  This was the straightest osage piece I've gotten my hands on.  It was from a thick plank that a rancher friend harvested and had milled.  The plank was 2 1/2" x 9" x 6', so I cut it into three equal pieces.  So far, I've gotten 2 selfbow sisters out of it, and one to go.

It's 62" n-n, 65# @ 26", tapering evenly from 1 5/8" to 3/8" tips.  A little tip-flipping, and a little set equaled out so that nocks ended up even with the back of the handle with a slight R/D profile.  It weighs in at 20.4 oz, which by my calculations matches Steve's mass calculation just about on the money.

I did a "fade to black" dye job for stealth, and just 'cause I like it.  Added a leather shelf & grip, and a bit of triggerfish skin for a strike plate (that stuff is like armor, and makes a good backing material, by the way.).

It shoots dang sweet.  I'm hoping to chase elk with it this fall, if I manage to draw a tag.

...Tom

Nice job. That is my favorite style of bow.Looks like a winner to me.
Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.

That's a purdy piece of yella wood, for sure!
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
