old hatchet(new pic)

i rescued this old hatchet  head from an antique store today for $3 (there was a couple more think i'll go back and get) . so when i got home today i sharpened and made a handle for it , the handle is post oak salvaged from a stave that checked real bad.
  i really like these old hatchets ,does anyone else use them or restore them ?  if so post some pics i would like to see.

That's really nice sa.  I've salvaged a few axes/hatchets and hammers.  The last one I bought a handle for  :-[  That's a great looking handle there; looks long too.  Great job. dpgratz

     Yes indeedy, when I go to flea markets, that is one of the things, I look for, and old files, other tools.  You can grind, or cut, a nice tomahawk out of that, even drill out the hammer peen, and have a peace pipe type of tomahawk. ;)  You did a good job on the handle, looks nice. 8)

beautiful job on restoring that hatchet!  I also look for old tools when I go to flea markets.. they don't make them like they used to  that's for sure!  Old tools are always better made.  :)

Like many others here, I hunt them and gather 'em wherever I find 'em.
Hatches, Hawks, Axes... oh and hammers too!
My wife asks me how many I need... I tell at least "One" more...

I have tried my hand at makingbelt axe handles for a small camper I carry in the woods and it always an epic fail.  So far the list includes attempts in hickory, maple, and osage.  My hat is off to you SA, well done. 

Plus, it's a really cool find!

I think initially that hatchet was for shingling - one side to split out the shingle and the other to nail it in place.  They are also very useful for splitting out staves from logs - used as ax to start a split or used as a wedge with the hammer end as a target for your sledge. 

I use one just like it, 2 wedges, and a sledge to split logs.   Warning - you are not supposed to hit metal on metal - so be careful if you do and wear those safety glasses.
