Could this work? - Crossbow
« on: March 14, 2012, 02:02:57 am »
Hello again everyone.

I'm planing on making a crossbow and I'm wonder if theses dimensions will work.

So it will be hickory backed hickory.
30' long (too short?)
12'draw
going for 60lbs draw.

Thanks for your opinions all advice & tips are welcome!

Sounds ok to me.
I blogged up the builing of my primitive crossbow in my bowyers diary starting about here.
It may be usefull. (Check the previous post too for the real start of the project)

I added a rawhide back for safety.

Would it be a waste to put rawhide over the hickory backed hickory, so have 2 backings?

I am not to sure about all wood prods. Have not worked with hickory yet. i have made various prods and so far all have broke. I would be more inclined to stick with steel or fibergalss prods.
At any rate maybe hickory will work just fine. For a prod to bew 30" I would shoot for a pull of 70-80 lbs.
May as well go for the Gusto......!

I have used.

Think about how you hold a crossbow when you shoot it... what will a breaking limb hit as it pivots on the end of the string and flips back?
Your eye... now ask yourself.
Is a rawhide backing going to rob you of any power? Probably not.
Might it just possibly save your eyesight? Maybe.
