My First Bow (Hickory Flatbow with full draw pics)
« on: March 04, 2012, 09:56:21 pm »
Here are some pics of the first bow that I made. It is 65" ntn, 1 3/4" wide at the fades, it pulls 55# at 26".  I started it at the Traditional Ways Gathering on Lake Superior under the tutelage of bowyer Mark Lambert. This was probably 4-5 years ago. I got it about 3/4 done with him and then took it home to collect dust for a few years because I was too chicken to take much wood off it on my own. Once I got out to Oregon I was able to get a some more guidance from Gordon and John Strunk and was able to finish it last year. I stained it black with leather dye and then sanded the stain off the ridges on the back and re-stained them brown to create the pattern that you see. The handle was my attempt at a classic Strunk style wrap. I'm quite happy with this bow, especially for my first. it shoots as straight as I can aim it and it hits hard. I just have to be careful when i use it in this wet Oregon weather but I haven't had any problems so far. Thanks for looking, any comments or critiques are welcome.  :)

That is a good safe design for a first bow, looks like you nailed the tiller too! Good work. 8)

Thank you, Judo Point

Thanks, Coaster. That's funny. Your comment reminded me of this picture...  ;D

Indian Guy, I agree, it was a great design for Mark to start me out on. And as for the tiller, it's not hard to nail a tiller with John Strunk looking over your shoulder.  ;)

Thank you, Medicine Wheel

Thanks Broketooth, I used Fiebing's black leather dye and the ridges I re-dyed with light brown.
