Oogabooga hand drill fire photos

Me take family camping for week. Need fire to cook mastadon steaks, keep saber-tooth cats away. Start with horseweed spindle and tulip poplar hearthboard. Ugh.

Hillbilly, that is so neet.  8)  Cody looks right at home and so involved. Tina take the photos? Hope you guys had a good time. I plan on making some overnight canoe trips down the Catawba and Savanna rivers soon. Should be fun weekends. Will take loads of photos.

Yep, Tina took the pics. Her and Cody both love camping. We had a great time, we were camped on the bank of Tellico Lake in eastern Tennesse, good place to be in the heat-just jump in when you get hot.

Dang, I thought you were wearing a sweater at first.   ;D
This is a great thread. Did Cody have to start his own fire if he wanted to eat?  ;)   Justin

Jamie, that's tiny dry cedar twigs on the outside, pine needles, cedar bark, and a sliver or two of cracked-cap polypore fungus for good measure. The polypore is really common on locust trees around here, and makes a great coal extender, especially if you're spinning a fire in the rain or snow and have damp tinder. As for the fur coat, hey I'm a caveman! You expect somebody that looks like Richard Simmons or something?  ;D

I am really itchin to try that. So dang cool or should I say hot. For a beginer which is easier bow or hand drill? What are some good substitutes for a spindle? Will erc work for a hearthboard, sapwood or heartwood? Hope you don't mind all the questions. Thanks.
Btw I love the fur coat! Got one just like it! Keep me Cro-Magnon warm at night! Me also want make fire keep woman warm at night! ;) :D
