« on: February 07, 2012, 07:29:12 pm »
i have some pretty good zebra wood boards hanging around and was wondering if anyone has put together a board bow using this stuff. i also have some pretty good hickory to back it with but for some reason i'm getting a bad vibe. but any ways, i was just wondering.

I have tried 2 times and both failed. I did a narrow and a wide design. I can not explain why but it just seamed to brittle for the entire belly. Both bows blew apart. But it is a hard wood? Save it for handles, tips, inlays ect. Maybe someone else has had luck with it?

What about a tri-lam?
Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.

I was thinking more of an all wood tri-lam. Hickory, zebra, walnut. Zebra handle and tips.

That would make a sharp looking bow for sure. Were it me I would go with that, but I am partial to all wood laminated bows anyways. Takes board bows to a whole new level in my opinion.

The zebra wood I had seemed kinda junky, so I asked a friend about it and he told me he tried some once and decided he would not sell a bow with it in the limbs !
He only builds FG bows that sell in excess of $1000 a piece !
So I got rid of mine , but some of you folks build bows from red oak boards that I feel is to junky for me Too, so to each his own!!

Guy i think the reason we use "junk" a lot of times is cause we really dont have any better options.

i feel like a lam between two hickory would be fine, like the core on a composite it would feel much less compression/tension force.  i was thinkin of doing something like this for my remaining purpleheart if my hickory backed purpleheart chysals :)

I hear ya on the use what you have ,there are folks that think every thing I have is junk !
I just don't like to see folks use good money to get junk !
Money is way to hard to come buy !!
