I have recently split black locust staves for trade

Hi Guys

A nice Black locust tree fell across my lawn in October and when the main truck was split out, I ended up with 12 or 13 very nice and fairly straight staves about eight feet in length.  Anybody looking to trade?

I am not particular, but any bow wood or shafts or feathers that I don't have already.   Right now I have an abundance of BL, what do you have?

Yes  -  i will try to get you guys some pics of the staves and the ends.  I am not to adept with all things electronic - but I am learning. 

As I am new to this whole trade idea - I have a question - - it seems to me that it could get quite expensive to mail a stave, so, how will I be able to trade with guys who are not so close geographically speaking to me?  To spend the $ on shipping sorta defeats the purpose of the whole trade idea, no?

Or am I really limited to those nearby?  I guess I answered my own Q, huh?

When I make a trade I try not to consider monatery value. If the trade is good for you and the trade is good for me, it a good trade. Shipping is just part of it. I spend 100 times a much for shipping as I do for any achery related items. The USPS gets most of my "extra" money.  ;)

You can reduce shipping cost by removing much of the physical weight of your staves. You can remove the bark and sapwood, but be sure to seal the back and ends good with shellac. Reduce width and a lot of belly material. All that adds value to your staves and reduces shipping weight. You can take matching (sisters) staves and reduce to matching billets (my favorite). Just a few things to think about.......Art

Agreed.  Cutting the staves down into bow blanks, or close, would save on shipping and increase the trade value of your wood IMO.  Good luck with your trading adventure....its pretty fun

Also you can just wrap the stave with shrink wrap and slap a label on it. Saves putting it in a box or tube and increasing the diameter size.
