tb3 +sinew ?'s
« on: December 20, 2011, 08:27:08 pm »
I built a 48"hic.bow for my boy.it developed a crack on a high spot on the back so I have decrownd it no more crack, I than heat treated the belly and removed some of the deflex. My next step is sinew...im going to use tb3.
I have never worked with sinew or tb3 before so do I do like jim hamm says in tbb1 or is it different with tb?also the bow is only1/4"thick will 2layers be enough to protect against breaking
thanks for any help :D

TBIII and sinew work fine. I wouldnt do more than one even layer.

I agree with Pearlie.   Sinew is a lot of work though. Linen or silk backing is pretty easy and will give you good protection.

Call it old school, maybe.  I would only use hide glue with sinew.  If you don't have any and need some, PM me and we'll work something small out in trade.

Just buy some gelatine ;) Titebond is messy and takes ages to dry and it's way more expensive with no added benfits over hide/sinew glue (gelatine).
One layer would keep it together.

I forgot to mention that I intend to put on a snake skin backing(provided I can find some)dose that make a difference? I want to keep it as stable as possible in the humid summer that is why I thought tb3 would be the way to go. Would gelatine work as good???
thanks on the one layer tip ;)

I've sinewed with titebond3 and hide glue, and although I like the hide glue better I would use titebond3 in your case seeing how its only being used for protection and not a performance enhancing drug ....it takes more time setting up and getting the hide glue just right, where as titebond you just squirt it out of a bottle. But if protection is all you want then there are easier ways of doing that.

I'm with Matt on this,if all I wanted was protection I would use rawhide or something like that. I see no reason sinew and TB3 won't work I just wouldn't wast the sinew.  :)

Goat or deer rawhide is plenty thin enough and very strong.  You can get linen and silk at a cloth store or as blouses, slacks or neck ties from your local thrift store. Some even has a nice design on it.  8)

I have no idea on paper. Get ahold of some old camo pants and use that material. It would help the back out and look cool if your a young boy!
