Western Sioux style juniper for a Jersey Lakota
« on: November 15, 2011, 01:36:26 pm »
I was contacted by a new friend living in New Jersey. He is Lakota and needed a like style bow and arrows for the beautiful quiver he got from Dave and Jan Hagstrom. The bow is rocky mountain juniper 46" with 3 layers of elk sinew. It has a draw of about 44# @ 23". The belly is finished just by rubbing smooth with a elk antler and lots of coats of grease. It really brings out a brilliant purple. The bow had a few small knots throughout that took some time to tiller around. The string is 2 ply deer sinew. The arrows are dogwood with wild turkey and imitation redtail feathers(his name is redhawk after all).  I was happy with how this turned out and hope it lasts many years in it's new home out east.
Thanks for looking
Chuck

Nice job Chuck. Very authentic in your details.

Hi Chuck,

Always enjoy your bow posts and this one is great.  I've often wondered about this Sioux bow design and the low brace height, do you ever get the back of your thumb hit at arrow release?

Incredible attention to being primitive. Beautiful bow and tiller
