My Former Jeep
« on: November 06, 2011, 09:46:30 pm »
This weekend was a tough (and expensive) hunt.  3 sits yielded no deer sightings.  Did see one 8pt walking back to camp with my bow but too far out to shoot.  Left for home after the evening hunt and at 11:30 pm my jeep passed away.  The SUV in front of me was hit by a pickup and began spinning.   I was not able to avoid the broadside SUV in front of me and hit it at 60mph,  The airbag went off,  I continued to try to steer but it was obvious that I was no longer in control.   The jeep swerved to the left and slammed into the median concrete barrier,  slid along it for 20 yards or so, finally screeching to a stop with smoke pouring out of the air bag and the engine compartment.  I shot across the cab and fell out onto the interstate.  Thankfully, traffic had stopped.  The man in the SUV sustained some pretty serious injuries though his passenger was completely uninjured.  Not sure about the driver of the pickup that was 100 yards behind where we were.   I got some bruises but nothing serious.  Mary drove over to pick me up and we got home about 2am this morning.  Finally got pictures of the jeep this afternoon and it frankly doesn't look as bad as I expected it to.

I hate the day after an accident, Lots of new sore spots.  Better than the alternative though.  I'm feeling pretty blessed today.

Guess now I'm shopping for a pickup.

I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt.  That could have been bad.  Hopefully everyone involved recovers quickly.

Thanks guys, I got out of it with just some bumps.  I wish I'd gotten the names of the other 2 that went to the hospital.  I have no idea how they are or how to find out.  The police report won't be available for a week or more.  Yes, it is just a jeep and I can replace it.  I'm lucky that the 12v battery in the back just broke the back seat back and didn't come up and over like a missle and it sure could have.  The saddest thing was going to the police impound place and seeing all the cars and trucks that represented horrible accidents.  Some so bad the vehicle model couldn't be determined.  Very sobering.

Glad to hear you are ok. ;)  Sorry about the Jeep, but like it was said it can be replaced.  Actually like you, I'm thinking it doesn't look as bad as I thought it would, and might be cheaper to get it fixed if the frame is ok, and the engine didn't get shoved back, damaging the drive train.  I hope the others come out ok also.  Maybe it is a good thing you didn't get any game, only to have it go bad, or end up whacking you in the back.  Yeah, a battery is not something you want to have hit you. :P

Georgy that is aweful, but thank God you were able to walk away from that.  If you come visit me at school I will send you down to the nurse.  She will give you a bandaid for your boom boom and two stickers

Kids love going to see her..

Thank God again that you are safe and sound!!!

Glad your ok George!  The jeep might not be totaled though, Ive seen some worse than that get repaired.  As long as the frame isnt bent.  I bet you could sell it to one of those rock crawler guys, they love those cherokees.

Thanks all.  Mr. C you crack me up. :D  You might be right JimBob.  I don't think it'll matter as I doubt I have collision on it anyway...it's a 96.  But, when I was there yesterday getting the pictures it looked to me like the radiator was mashed into the engine and both front doors were sprung.  I sure don't want to fix it and if it's still mine after talking to the insurance guy I'll have it towed to the salvage yard.  They'll probably auction it off or cut it up for parts.  It was a good vehicle, never got stuck with it, though close a couple times. ;D  I work with a guy who does that, actually there are 3 of them.  I'll ask them if they want it.
