First Stone tipped Hunting Arrows!!!
« on: October 14, 2011, 09:12:14 pm »
Here they are finally!  I used viburnum shaft, turkey primaries, deer backstrap sinew and pine pitch.  The points were given to me by hummingbirdpoint who lives about 20 min away and gave me my first knapping lesson a couple years ago.  I havnt had the time or material and probably skill to make any hunting size points :).  They weigh 608 and 596 grains.  The one with the black point is 30 inches and the other is 29 inches.  I cut the feathers to 5/8" tall.  I might go back and trim them down to 1/2".

These arrows fly better than my store bought carbons!

Thanks to everyone again for all the help through this process!!

Excellent arrows!!!  8)  Isn't it a thrill when you finally get your arrows to fly better than the store bought ones?  8)  Viburnum makes great arrows too. What species is that? I have V. prunifolium (Blackhaw) on my property and not far away is plenty of arrowwood Viburnum but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks Pat B and yes it is!!  It means a lot coming from you.  My friend showed me what it was and he said it was arrowwood viburnum.

Thats amazing how straight you have those shafts. I have cut some off shoots and what I call suckers. Some I've had in the house for a year. I am starting on some that I think wouldbe a challenge for anyone , but I need to start somewhere. It's cheap/free right. Well I read that afer scraping use oil to heat and straighten. Haven't gotten down to weighing but they are as close as the eye ball can get on front and rear diameter and length. Your arrows are awesome and beaautiful to boot. What was the sealer/finish you used on the shafts? Your arrows are now my goal to try and emulate.

Your transition between stone and shaft is very good. Not much chance od a hang up there!
