Well Pappy, the bow is in california ecctually

The owner told me of the fret, but sayd that the bow hasn't changed it's shooting manners, and from my experiance with some of my older ones, it should last forever still.

Sorry to hear that, Manny and Ghost Dog. I am happy to say mine is still doing fine (and I'm doing a little better with it - getting used to where i have to "pick a spot"). Hope all turns out well Ghost Dog. I'd hate for anything to happen to any of my bows (naturally - even though "stuff" does happen, I know) but I would really hate for anything serious to happen to "Hula Girl", she's a FUN kinda girl  !

Yeah I hate to hear things like that ... but the bow is still going from what Bob's telling me.


I have 2 old bows that have huge compression fractures, but are still shooting well after few years of using and even hunting.

I'm gonna use those 2 for a thread that I'll start net week and see how far I can bend the before they break, I need to learn how really fatal those fractures are for the bows, .....it should be fun

Great Looking Bow , I love Guava bows, but I can't get staves anymore due to all the hurricanes in Florida must guava trees flew away and it takes several years for guava to grow, it is a very tight grain wood hard and at the same time flexible, it makes very nice looking bows, but the wood must be very dry before you work on it.
I will buy a stave is you have one Northshore, I thought you lived in Fla because of the trees, LOL

Or I can trade for rattle snake skins, or deer skins, deer antlers, That bow would look awesome if covered with rattle snake skins.
I also have Exotic woods from Africa and south America for risers or lamination bows, like sapele ,blood wood, Cherry, teak, zebra wood, coco bolo and many other beautiful woods. I can trade for a guava stave or a gourd wood stave.

How long do you let them cure ?... I was just tempering a bow that was down to dimentions for 6 months and still showed beads of moisture.

Guava need to be cured at least 1 year, the wood is very tight and the core takes at least that long to cure, in a dry environment, in a high humidity environment like south Fla even 2 years is necessary.

Don't they split vertically when they are not dry ? It has for me , several times.
Is like working with mangrove or sea grape wood it has to be real dry.
Know anybody who sell guava wood ?

I've being thinking of trying Sea grape, it looks like a real good wood.

Never split verticaly for me, just some longitudinal small cracks if I'm belly tempering.

Sea grape is good but hard wood to work with, I have used it  mainly in laminate bows, but they last forever.

Finally another guava bower! I have made a few guava bows and they seem to take alot more to keep them from breaking. Sorry to hear that it happened to you as well.
