Bevan, they are more menacing to me because when you see them on a log or tuff ofgrass, you are usually waist deep or chest deep, wading in that water hunting down here. Kinda makes you think about what it would be like getting popped in the face or chest.

anyone hear of this?  if a snake swims with body on top of water, its not poisonous, if it swims under then it is..  or maybe i have that backwards.  i could swear ive heard something like that somewhere..

That's what I've always heard. Never really payed to much attention. Always kept one eye on them and the other on what I was doing .

 I would rather walk up on a rattler. At least it don't chase ya

thats actually backwards the cottonmouth is very bouyant . nonvenimous snakes will be submerged except for their head and a coil or two

We dont have them here in Eastern Canada but I've heard that Cotton Mouths are very bad tempered and aggressive

Neat little pond you own there Ken. How many cottonmouths did you see there on that excursion? Looks like a lot. How long have you seen em?

I grew up on sum acres that backed up to "the Bosque River." had cottonmouths. Mean and agressive snakes. I killed a few in my yewins days...

They all swim above and below the water. How you think them cottonmouths hunt and eat?

Cottonmouths will have the dark band behind the eye, like you can clearly see in his photos...generally a pretty easy way to tell it from harmless northern or banded watersnakes if you other wise dont know what youre looking for.

which also reminds me....i caught a black rat snake yesterday. Most all Ive caught were docile (not to be confused with a black racer that gets pissy when handled....atleast in my experience)..........he tried biting me the whole time I had him. I put him down, figured he need them teef for catchin prey more than I needed them in my arm.

criver 7 cottonmouths on this trip only got pictures of 6 though i was trying to get the 7th but he was trying to get in the boat so i decided to hell with pics it was time to go
