finished osage bow
« on: February 12, 2011, 11:53:45 pm »
Hi guys.  Pretty new to this site.  Thought I'd share the bow I just finished.  It an osage take down using a sleeve.  I used matching billets on it.  I glued on horn overlays to protect the backing going into the sleeves and glued on some more handle material (osage and a small piece of paduak).  Had lots of checks in the osage backing after putting it in the oven at 180 F for 2 hrs to cure the smooth on.  Maybe it would have been fine but I decided to back it with silk.  I live in Thailand so its easy to come by.  $10 for a half meter and got the heavier 3 strand stuff.  Color is "pig blood red" >:D so you can see some of the intentions I have for the bow.

I did some modoc style art on the silk.

Bow is 63" long (top limb is 1" longer than bottom)  its pulling 58# @ 28"

horn is from an albino water buffalo and it was spray painted red by the owner so I decided to go with the red theme.

While I originally wanted to make a deep grip and shoot off the hand the take down handle is more oval and I didn't have a big enough vice at home to make it longer and narrow so I have put a shelf on it.

Finally got a chance to shoot it at the range last night and it shoots nice and packs a punch.  I've been making bows for a few years now and I think this is my best one to date.  Looking forward to taking her hunting.  I need to get some of James Parker's stone points on my bamboo arrows and see how they fly.

here is how bad it checked after the oven.  I decided to fill them with super glue but I guess I could have waited and they would have closed up a bit.  back is roughed up a bit here to apply the backing and to get rid of the super glue on the surface.

one more full draw from the other side.  This side shows a little bit of twist in the upper limb but she shoots good.

Nice. Like the look. 8)

Does your overlay at the grip go into the takedown sleeve?

The photo showing the buff horn sanded down is really interesting.  The remaining red paint that did not get sanded off in the grooves looks like raw wounds like from a large cat's claws.  Nice looking bow, bet it shoots pretty sweet, too.

Thanks guys.  Yes I like the way it shoots.  Its a little loud.  Not sure if its the new string, the brace height or I just need to add some silencers?  I have some otter fur I was going to try on it.

Nice job Gaur,
I think I have seen your work on PP haven't I ?    I have a takedown sleeve in the drawer that one day I'm going to do one with as well. I say you stuck that one nicely. Let us know what you find out on the loudness so I can try and make adjustments on mine when I do it.  Welcome to the site.  Danny

A dearth to the tribe "Pig"  Nice looking bow. Lots of elements there and she looks like she ought'a hold up. Thanks for sharing.  '  Frank
