River cane nocking and hafting?

How far behind my last node do I cut my selfnock?
Do I have to use a foreshaft on the front or can I haft my stone tips to the cane?

You can cut the nock anywhere as long as you wrap in front of it. And you can haft points directly to the cane.

River cane is versatile.  I personally like to use foreshafts but, like Hillbilly said, points can be hafted to the cane itself.  The reason I use foreshafts is because I like to taper the point before adding the arrowhead.  The fat part of the cane is a bit clumsy, but a smooth transition between cane and arrowhead is possible if you use a gap filling glue like epoxy.

Thanks guys,....I was planning on putting sinew in front of my nocks even by a node.Since I don't have to nock at a node my arrow selection will be much better.I may still plug the front end ,so I can taper some for field points....Thanks again

I cut my cane about 3/8" from the node on the back end. That way, the valley of the nock is right on the node, and I don't have to wrap below the nock. Sometimes I do it anyway, but I don't feel it's necessary.
