After my recent first whack at osage, which hasn't produced a bow, but which
was a great learning experience, I went back to examine the remnants of the source (BTW, what's the difference between a quarter log and a stave, or is one just a bigger stave
).
There's enough left to do two more full length attempts, but both of those would present the same difficulties that plagued the first one (

However, if I move inboard from each end just past the major zigs and zags (between the tape marks in the pics below), I'm left with exactly 36" of pretty straight, only moderately twisted (30 degrees or less) twisted wood, with only a couple of visible knots. That
should yield two nice pieces for a take-down, each 1 3/8" to 1 1/2" wide.
Looks like it'd be a bit easier to pull off that the first try anyway.
