Carefully and deliberately. ;D   I prefer to use a dull draw knife. It helps if the stave is between you and bright sun light.

I find the ring I want, go up along the right, down the middle and down the left. Continue. I always find the ring I want along the right. That way if I make a mistake it;s on the edges and will disappear when I shape the bow. I lave the stave full width while chasing. Primary tools are a Swedish push knife and curved shave hooks.
