How to secure the blade to the handle?

How does that work?  Just sinew?  Does anyone have any pictures of the joint?

well it all depends on the blade and the look i want from the knife
some i make real pretty and cut notch in the wood ,fill it with epoxy and insert the blade
others that i want a primiteve look,cut notch,apply hot pitch,insert blade,let cool,wrap with sinew

as far as the joint goes,i mke the notch in the wood slightly bigger than the thickness of the blade
this way there leaves rom for the adhesive and room to adjust the blade so its more or less centered

 I just mounted one yesterday. I'll take a picture when I get home from work. I have started using 5 minute JBWeld on mine. It fills in the gaps real good.

Thanks guys.  I apparently have a lot to do before I get anywhere near that point.  I'm wanting to make a knife...I bought a cheap plate at Wal-Mart to practice with.  I can't seem to get the flakes to come off consistently...my edges look all curvy and I can't get some places to even come to a clean edge...the pressure flakes come up at way to sharp an angle or there's a flat spot on the edge.

I do like Eddie, but with 5 minute epoxy.

Go to one of the local floor tile stores and ask if they have broken porcelain tile you can have. The thickness is great and the price is right. Not all porcelain is created equal so it might not all work, but when it is free you can afford to throw away a little.

Thanks, Justin.  I'll ask the next time I'm in Lowes or something.  I'm going to have to go through quite a bit to get my edges figured out I think.

I use either Oitch or JB Weld...and I haft it with Pig Gut after the Glue sets...and then coat the wet Gut with Hide Glue to finsh it off....

It's all in the platforms and balance between inward and downward pressure with the flaker. Grind those platforms, and make sure they're below the center line, but not all the way even with the bottom. Most of your pressure should be directed inward.  Flakes don't travel far on a flat surface, they follow ridges, and won't run through dips.

 Mak, it is 7" tip to tip. The blade was 4" before mounting.  It is wrapped in Hemp.
