Was wanting to know if you could put rawhide on a snakey osage? Then put snakeskin over the top of rawhide.I was thinking this up while working today.would be nice just to make bows for a liven!!!

Sure you can! Just because it's snakey doesn't change what the raw hide will do for it.

I would stain the rawhide a dark color before adding the snakeskin.

there is a pic in the bows section that i made for recurve shooter it is backed with rawhide and rattlers not a problem.

Hey Rock hound,is there something wrong with the back of your bow,like a violated ring or something? Otherwise,you sure don't need to back osage with rawhide( unless there's a problem).

Sure you can,I have done it several times when I was not sure I followed the longitudinal grain perfectly.Here is one I used rawhide on.

Not to hijack, but would you need to cut a piece of "snakey" rawhide, or can you get a regular rawhide strip to follow the bow like a snake skin can? Just curious.

I just lay a piece wide enough to cover all the curves and then file off the edges.If you try to twist it around it will get wrinkle's very easy.Never thought about cutting it out first but I am sure that would work also.

pappy didn't that stave give you two of those bows side by side, band saw from one stave ?The first Osage bows I made were deer hide and rattler backed cut from one big stave I just wanted a bow that would not break and had the deer hide other wise they were clear back self bows.

3 bows,that was the belly split,the other 2 came from the outside,sisters. I only put rawhide on this one the others were easy enought to follow the grain.

If I split out something that snakey from a log it would be in the house getting pampered.after I cleaned it up of course. well the good thing about it I will always have something to look forward to my luck I would split it wrong and not get it to make a snakey Osage from it.
