Mountain Maple Recurve, with a little character
« on: September 09, 2009, 09:39:07 pm »
This is one of my latest bows. I made it for one of my friends who wanted just a cool looking bow that was fun to shoot. So I made this one out of a Mountain Maple sapling a little less then a inch and a half in diameter. It is 64" long and pulls 35# at 28". It's 1 1/4 at the fades to almost 7/8 up the limb then it tapers to 3/8. I left alot of cambium on the back to give it a camo effect and hopefully the cool look he wanted. The stave was one of the most crooked I have ever worked with and most of the time spent on this bow was steaming and straightening it. I have never had so much trouble getting good string alignment. Being so narrow it has taken some string follow, around an inch, I could have lengthened the bow to reduce it but he wanted it short. I gave it to him a while ago and he loved it, so i'm happy with it.

Ha Ha, yeah I live in the desert. It's a lot of fun trying to get wood here, that mountain maple came from my last trip to Montana. ;D

Yes Radius yew does grow in Montana but I never was able to find it. I haven't stopped looking though. I noticed that I didn't get it to full draw in the picture but it's too late to take more sorry guys.

You are doing really good work with mountain maple. This wood is common around here and I have had some luck with it. I can't imagine it is growing where you are. Where are youi getting mountain maple?
