well i learned how NOT to cut self nocks in my cane
« on: August 24, 2009, 09:24:59 am »
i was working on my cane last night, got em good and strait, cut down to just a little longer than the length i need. i started cutting nocks last night. i was useing a thin serrated blade to cut the nock itself, then a piece of sand paper to get the inside of it smooth. well while i was sawing on one i went to far, split the node, and added the 3rd large scar to my right index finger sence july.  :'(

anyway, after that i got a cloths hanger and got it red hot on the stove and burned the nocks in. how do yall do it with out cutting off your fingers?

I cut mine on the band saw then clean it up with a file and sand paper.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

I do mine with a hacksaw, then open it up with a chainsaw file.

Saw a slot 3/8" deep and then open it up with a small round file, usually.

I use a band saw to make the initial slot then fit it to the string with a thin bladed knife and sand paper.

Does anyone drill a hole through the shaft then saw to the hole so it looks like a commercial plastic knock?

dremmel tools rule if you have one.
Just made 15 nocks on new arrows the other night.
I use a cutting blade to make the first straight cut. It is prob an inch dia and made for cutting wood. then I take a drill blade that is made for taking out grout from tile. It is the perfect diameter for my string with serving. run that through the bottom and widen it a bit.
Then take a sanding drum and shape up the top. finish up with a couple licks of sand paper and you have a knock that snaps on the string and didnt take long at all.

I do each step with all arrows. i.e., cut all depths then drill out all centers etc.
let me know if you need pics of the dremmel extensions. If you have one it works great.

I use the drill hole first method with cane arrow,  BUT I glue in a small dowel in the hollow, let it dry a day or so then drill it.  I tape the cane also to help prevent splitting.  I am NO expert on arrow making.  I've made about 6 cane arrows and about 6 dowel arrows.  So, this method might be completely screwy.  It just what I figured out.  haha

i seen em done like that. might work well, but im to lazy to get the dowels to fit. gunna go with self nocks on the first set and see how they treat me.

I've tried about everything mentioned here, but the best thing I have found bar-none,is a ceramic saw.(It is made in a coping saw type frame).I got mine at lowe's.With this tool you can cut nocks in seconds, and make them look good too. ;)   God Bless
