need your eyes
« on: August 04, 2009, 12:05:27 am »
this is a bow that i have been working on since like last december.
it has taken so long because i got hooked un knapping in january, and havent really touched much wood since then.
it is a hickory stave that Dana sent me,thanks again .
its 62.5" ntn,1.75" wide at the fades, its pulling about 45# @ 23"(stiil need to recheck the weight)
i am looking to get about 50ish at 28"
i have been looking at the tiller and my eyes are going goofy and just want other eyes to help me out here.
the stave has some prop twist to it which in turn makes it tougher to see true tiller, one limb also has a knot in it so i left it stiff in the area of the knot(the one without the mark).
here are some pics
i put a black mark on both side of one limb right at the fades,i did this so i could remeber which limb was which

thanks for looking and please let me know what ya all think
                                                                                        peace,

Tim....the Bottom Limb looks a little stiffer than the Top...but thats not a bad thing at all....I think it looks pretty damned good myself

Looks damn good to me, maybe the merest hint of a whisker could come off the end of the upper limb, but that's just my Catly view, as I like to see a whole limb working....oh no we're back onto the working tip discussion...

What Pappy said work it out another 2" and see what it looks like, if anything a little more bend from the middle out.
Overall it looks good :) Remember to keep that hickory dry eh

I'm with Dana.  I think you are pulling a hinge in the lower limb, all the bend is in one spot and 2/3 of the limb is straight.  It will cost you a couple of pounds, but might save you a bow.

If it is prop twisted check the tiller from both sides. That sides looks good to me. Just make sure the bending is starting at the end of the fads as that is a short stave for a 28 in. draw. The near handle area looks like it need more bending. Jawge

I can't add anything to all the good advice except one small thing. It will make a slight difference on your string angle pulling with 4 fingers.

TBOD

yes i use windows paint to do the elipse.
however i cant and wont take credit for it,that is something i learned from el destructo on this site.
thanks to him and that little trick i dont wreck nearly as many staves and most come out at or real close to the intended draw weight

Gee....I am Honored Tim !!!

But remember that this is just a Visual Tool....Just like the Gizmo is....don't take it for a Definite when Tillering a Bow....I use it on both Stiff Handled and Bendy Handled Bows....just make sure that it is even with the center of the Handle Area....and it covers all the way to the Tips evenly....also make sure that You have the Bow as close to perfectly Vertical as possible...and don't Cant the Limbs at all either....then open the Picture in Paint...go to Image....Flip Image 90 degrees....then click on the Ellipse....select a Color for it....and then play with it till you figure it out.....works great for Me....you may not Like it....but it is definitely worth a Try.....JMO
