is there a 12 step program for ipe addiction?
« on: June 01, 2009, 04:12:50 am »
70" ntn hickory/walnut/ipe with 3" of glued in reflex (not Perry- i didn't tiller the core). i like the way walnut kicks an arrow, i can't afford boo at the moment- hickory rocks anyways, and i'm addicted to ipe. this seemed like the natural combination of these woods. it's tillered to 23" so far. i like to get them to 20"-24" & let them rest for a day or so before i take them to 30". i'll post the finished pics, uhhh, when i finish?

first one is just after being braced for 6 hours, the second is on the tree at 23" (probably a little more due to the thick handle & the washcloth pad)

i welcome all advice on tiller!
Rob

Can't tell from the picture, but supposing your bow and the lines on the wall are level, then you're right limb is bending more.  Could just be the picture though.  Other than that the tiller looks good so far.

The cure for an ipe addiction is simple.  Do something other than making bows with it......You will learn to absolutely hate it. ;D

Decking by chance, Rick?  ;D
Hickory is an excellent backing for most woods. Ipe is an excellent belly wood. The combo of the two can't be too bad.
Rob, your bow opens up nicely at full draw. I have troubles tillering R/D style bows.  ??? Obviously you don't! ;)

rick- i was thinking about laminating a hickory/ipe stock for my old Remington 600 to give it a little more weight & pretty it up.... ::)

Pat- that took me hours to get right! 10 scrapes at a time got me there- eventually. i'm definitely following Perry's directions better from now on & pre-tillering the belly!

thanks,
Rob

I did alot of hands on type work and worked with Mortars.  Learned to eyeball levels, used to be able to see 1/16" but I'm out of practice.   :D

Pat-
You got it, everybody has to have Ipe decks, rails, stairs, pergolas, etc. around here.  Personally I only like Ipe if it comes in the form of a bow made by David Knight. ;D
