It was supposed to be a Dovetail
« on: May 27, 2009, 03:41:27 pm »
I could kick myself in the butt for not looking at some of my authentic Dovetails before I notched this one. >:(  The notches should have been a little more horizontal and would have actually been easier to make.
Oh well, I'm happy with how it turned out anyway.  It's the biggest piece I've made so far. I used as much percussion as I dared, but still had to resort to a good bit of pressere to clean it up and get it to look like anything.
And for anyone wanting to permanently sign your work, a little electric engraver works pretty good. You just have to go slow and let it barely touch the rock. ;) One you get it signed, a dab of wax makes it all but invisible.

Very nice Shannon! You can call it what ya want, the base  favors a Hopewell, but there were variances of dovetails, just like most all other point types. Ya done good son.

Thank Ya'll :)
Barry, don't give me that ::) I know what you can do ;)

Dana, you'll get yours.  I just need to get my hands on some more rock.  Right now I'm down to one more piece. :(

Your right about the different variations Tim. I hadn't even thought about the Hopewells though. You're right again, it does kinda look like one. That, or a Kirk corner notched.   It's Georgetown chert, I wish I had a ton of it!

I been doing a little research and have found out that Sonora flint comes from a couple counties west of me.  I plan to do a little driving and see if I can come up with anything. It would be nice if I could, it's really nice looking rock.

Redwasp, I just used a little cheap engraver.

 Thanks Rick ;D

Tracy, I believe it's different.  Most all the points I've seen made from it are blue, grey, brown and sorta reddish mottled. It's very glossy and about all of it has tiny little air pockets in it.   I may never find any of it, but I'm gonna try.
