whats the best way to glue on horn overlays, and what kind of glue?

I've used two-ton epoxy, titebond3, and gel superglue. All of'em worked.

I had an overlay come off with TB, and was suggested to try this stuff called "plastic weld" by my bowyer friend in WA state.  Basically two ton epoxy.  Made by permatex.  Good news is it drys same color as osage.

I just piked a self bow and wanted to get the antler overlay off I had on and for the life of me can't remove it with teh plastic weld.  I had to put on a bandsaw and cut between teh wood and antler and then sand off the plastic weld epoxy and wood.

I usually use TB3 on wood overlays, and epoxy on antler,horn, and stuff. If you have a good smooth mating surface and the pieces are clean, the whole tip will rip apart before the TB lets loose.

I had an antler tip come off with TB.  I wonder if it was because it was antler?

I've had antler and horn come off with super glue and epoxy, but never with TB II. For wood I always use TB.

Always used CA glue. I get the thicker stuff that sets in 25 seconds, from Grizzly. never had a failure yet,wood or horn. Clean both parts with acetone before any glueing.

So there you have it. Getting a good mating of surfaces that suits the glue used (smooth and perfectly fitting for TB, roughed up for epoxy) is probably more important than what glue you use, along with having them clean and degreased. I've used all three glues mentioned, and havven't had one come off yet with either one.

What works best for me is CA "flexible" glue.  You can get it at most woodworking stores.  This is a super glue that stays flexible and seems to help keep the tips on very well.  I have never had a failure with it.

I've used mostly titebond 3 and super glue and had pretty good results with both on both antler and wood. I have had failures with cheap two ton epoxy though I won't be using that stuff again.
