rawhide backed black locust
« on: April 17, 2009, 04:24:25 pm »
made this one from a 3 - 4" sapling , decrowned back , rawhide backing .
64" NtN , 55# @ 28"
This one had me scratching my head at times while tillering it because of a bend in one of the limbs right at the fade out .....  ???  still not sure ...  :-\
only put one arrow through it due to my finger injury ...  :'(
still want to do a bit more decorating on it

would land up in Gwantanomo bay for life because of the decorations , if I lived in the US...  :P

Nice bow, man. Do you find that the rawhide backing caused it to take any set?

Looks nice, I like the grip, looks like you have a white stabilizer sticking out the front of the bow, lol, sorry hate to make fun of your injury.

C. pup - didn't really measure the set but it doesn't seem to be excessive , just hoping it doesn't slow it down too much , it's one of the bows I'll be taking hunting in June

VB - " white stabilizer sticking out the front" ..... good one , I love it , he he he !!! ....  ;D

Nice bow man! I was going to mention something about that raptor leg but you already did, and after all that is Africa :).

Nice job on this locust sapling bow, Chris. I also thought you had a stabilizer attached. ;D

Im trying to do one like this out of a BL tree of the same size.... did you leave any sapwood on or did you go down to the heart wood. Also i relly dont wnat to have to back it. Any special reason you backed yours.

Killer looking bow, really nice! Hope I can make one look that good.

Thanks

Smoke U - I backed it with rawhide because I decrowned the back , cutting the back flatter because I felt that the back was too rounded thus violating the growth rings , and also there were branches coming out of it that I had to cut through. This bow could never have been a bow without backing. The rawhide I made myself , is trancelucent and shows the colour of the wood underneath and discolorations on the rawhide . I am very happy with the way it has come out as it is my first attempt at rawhide backing ....  ;D  this means I can use wood that I would never have used before.
will post some pics of the back if I can get my computer to work ...  >:(
Ye Pat that was nearly a detachable stabilizer , but we decided to attach it permanently with some  artificial horse hair .....  :o

Thanx guys ( hey why there no gals ? ) I'm glad you like it

Turned out nice.

Love the pinky show.  Not being callous, as it appears you have injured it, but I enjoy a reputation for pokin out my pinky on full draw pics.  Completely involuntary I assure you but folks ascribe a certain "uppityness" none the less, asif I were sippin' high tea.

Very nice looking bow. I really like the rawhide backing. Got a real thin ringed osage stave I am going to try and rawhide back myself. Thanks for sharing. Dean
