Does sasafras need backing if it taken down to one ring,thanks for the info Dave,also is sasafras make a good bow wood.

I made one. It think it is backed because it had thin rings. I would say it is a fair bow wood. It needs to be at least 2 in wide and more like 2.5 in. Jawge

I've made a couple with the backs being from just under the bark. The heavier ones needed backing, but the lighter ones and deflexed ones were fine without. Mine were 1 1/4" wide ELBs.

Thanks for the info guys,I am kinda understanding it isnt the best wood for a heavier elb,I know the answer is yew but at 200 bucks and a first attempt at an elb its pricey,thanks Dave.

Osage, and heat-tempered hickory, elm, hophornbeam, GUAVA, ipe, ash, and white oak all make excellent heavy weight ELBs. Yew isn't the only option :).
