Reindeer Backstrap
« on: March 20, 2009, 05:08:12 pm »

Has anyone ever use (european) reendeer (not karibou) backstrap?? Is that good stuff???
The straps are 20" long, come from Samii people in Skandinavia.
I could purchase some for okay money.

Thanks for your help.

Before someone else says it......let me say this:

Send it to me and I'll let you know. ;D >:D

(If I were you, I would buy some, try it........and make friends with the seller if it turns out to be good stuff)
Any critter tastes good with enough butter on it.

I don't know why it wouldn't be good. If the price is right, try it. See if you can get some of the meat too! ;D

I concur with Pat...they should work just as fine as Elk...Moose...or Deer....heck ...they slaughter Horses in Europe for Food ....the Backstraps from a Horse would be good too.... I am going to see if I can get some from the Slaughterhouse in Amarillo for Beef...and see if they are worth the Trouble too......they throw it all away anyways..... I have used Ostrich and it works good too.....so why not Reigndeer???

hmm.. I have been working with reindeer skin for some time, bu I have never ever backed a bow with any type of skin. I guess it should do fine, but no miracles to be expected. If I were you I would do something else from them hides 8)
I can not help my self, but Sami people don't only live in Scandinavia. I think Fennoscandia would be more of a geographically correct term. Good luck With the hides!

Finn, I think he is referring to using the backstrap sinew, not the hide.

Hi,
It works just fine. I have two bows that have reindeer sinew on it and I think it works just as well as all the other sinews!!!
Thanks for your time.
