some horn nocks

Here are some horn nocks I am making and some I've made
I will do a "nock along" with the next bow I'm doing as I have two ELBs on the go at the moment


some big war bow nocks


some that I'm busy with at the moment


top bow 60# @ 28"
middle bow  95# @ 32"
bottom bow  45# @ 28"


nocks on the 45# ELB  and one with the stringer on

African Man, this will be very helpful to me and others. I know from my own experience, that horn nocks are as complicated to shape and fit properly as the bows are to make. A build along building and fitting suggestions will go a long way to helping me with horn nocks and I'm sure others will benefit too!

Nice nocks Chris. what sort of beastie do they come from?

Making them on a mandrel (piece of scrap wood made to fit the hole) makes them a lot easier to carve, I find.

PatB....give me a few days and I'll post once I've done them....(trying a new belly wood, hope it holds out...  :-\  and I have a bow to put them on....)

Triumph + norton = triton.... ;)
The horns in the photo are  Nyala and Kudu they are the black and white ones , Wilde bees (wild cow) they are the black ones.  I use a mandrill for some of the shaping, (saves the fingers getting ground on the belt sander) but most of it I just "do by hand"

Excelent nocks AM!

How do you shape the holes for the bow?

What are all those woods in the bows????

Purbeck  thanks, I will be doing a bit of a " build along " on nocks  this week so I'll put all of the info on how I do it there....... (I use a ground down spade bit)
The wood in those bows are African Iron wood, assagi, Purple hart, Hickory, Bamboo flooring but I'm nearly onto useing only african indigenous woods ..... :-\ :-\ :-\

Purbeck  The Kudu and Nyala give a nice two tone colour, but very occasionally you will find delamination happening. Wilde Beese , Bless buck, Impala, Sable give a black horn, which I personly like. I suppose they are all good

I have been a long time in traditinal and primitive archery, but just registered to this site.  My need right now is for a set of horn bow nocks for a longbow I am making for a customer.  He really wants whit, mottled white or even brown - not the Indonesian black water buffalo.

Does anyone on this site make such a thing for sale or know where I can look?

I've had to strip the Triton for a complete rebild and found I'd broken the featherbed, so some welding needed but not beyond my capabilities. Now riding the 71 Daytona. Such a slim bike, I'm not sure I'm going to able to ge the bows loaded on it.
