Locust D Bow
« on: March 12, 2009, 11:06:40 pm »
Hey guys, here is a short woodland D bow. Black Locust, 54 inches long, 1 1/8 wide at the handle to about midlimb and 5/8 at the tips. It pulls 47 @ 26 inches. Has some lard and deer fat rubbed in for the finish. It has about one inch of set, that happened mostly I when narrowed it from 1 1/4 down to 1 1/8. I'm going to try another one and leave it 1 1/4 wide.

Good looking bow, Alan, looks like it came right off the pages of the Encyclopedia of Native American Bows, Arrows, and Quivers. Perfect tiller, too- just the right amount of bend in the handle. How's it shoot?

Thanks Pat, it took me a lot of tries to get one of these right. My first several looked something like
>bows instead of D bows!  :D

Thanks Timo.

Thanks George.

Thanks John, I'll just leave the handle like it is on this one.

Thanks Steve, that's what I was going for on this one. I'm going to put a groundhog hide string on the next one too. It's draws pretty smooth and shoots good for a short bow.

Thanks Oldbow.

Thanks Brownhillboy.

Nice bow, it's what I've been trying to build. Number one was hickory, but I got in a hurry and ruined it with a draw knife. Number two was out of oak, I thought I had it figured out but that one broke at full draw. I'm getting ready to start number three out of a black locust stave (man that stuff is hard to carve on!) Wondered how thick your bow ended up being? How far did you taper the nock ends?

Thanks old foul dude, this bow is about 1/2" thick at the handle and 3/8" at the tips. It's 1 1/8" wide from the handle to midlimb then tapers to 5/8" at the tips.

Thanks Justaim.

Nice bow Alan. I've got one just like it in the works. Only difference is mine is 60" long. Do you like the feel without the handle built up? I can't decide on mine yet. I'll have to shoot it I guess before I'll know. Great job.
