Can you tell what kind of wood?
« on: March 07, 2009, 05:50:20 pm »
Here are two different trees that was taken down by the ice storm last month. I am not sure what kind of trees these are. I think they are the same but the bark looks different on each of them. I tried to find some leaves to help but there were so many I didn't know what went with what tree. At first I thought they may be cedar but I don't think so. If any one could help me with this I would appreciate it.  The other pics are on down.       Thanks              Kenny

I have to agree.....that was my first Guess....and the Needles....Bark and Knots where the Branches were sure resemble White Pine too

If the needles go with the logs, yeah, white pine. Not bow wood, but if you can find straight clean pieces between the whorls of limbs, you can make some pretty good arrows out of it.

The wood in them logs ain't pine.  I'd guess cherry on the first, and perhaps an oak on the second.  Better pic of bark, limbs, leaves, etc. would help id them.

If its pine it will smell like pine, its not Black cherry as by the time it gets to that size cherry has dark scally bark.

The bark on them  looks a lot like oak, that's why I asked if the needles went with the logs.

Like Steve said, white pine has whorled branches up the trunk. The knots on that aren't in a whorl but single. My first thought was oak. Cut it to length and split out one stave(at least), remove the bark and look at the grain of the wood.
