80# Red Oak

Hey Everybody,

I asked about an 80 lb. design a while ago and got some good advice.  Here is what I ended up with:
   - red oak board
   - 72" tip-to-tip (71" nock-to-nock)
   - 1 11/16" wide midlimb-to-midlimb (center 5" narrowed a bit for a more comfortable grip), then straight taper to 3/8"
                  tips
   - bend through the handle tiller
   - 80# @ 28"
   - approx. 1 1/2" of set

The picture shows the bow at about 24" of draw…my camera-man was a little slow, not a good mix with an 80 lb draw weight!  :)

I've shot this bow during a couple of sessions, and it really sinks my normal hunting weight arrows into my target.  I don't think I will be making too many more this heavy…unless I find some elephants to hunt!  :)

I'd have to have a shovel with me to pick my guts up after pulling that back.

Nice looking bow. Tiller looks good.

Thaks bearbowman.  The outer limbs should have bent a little more, I think.  It has a little handshock going on.

You could shoot elk with that one.. won't matter if they are behind a tree or not ;D good looking bow .....Hawk

Wow-what a power house. Probably hit an elk here in Montana with that thing. Got your weapon bookmarked for March Self BOM.

Wow! Thanks everybody.  I'll ty to remeber to post some better pics later.  I forgot to mention that it is a self-bow.  I have since wrapped some jute twine around the grip in hopes of absorbing some of the shock.  I probably just need to shoot arrows of the proper weight.

Or lighten the tips. I shoot bows around that weight all the time with arrows about 600 gr, and light tips do wodners for keeping hand shock down.

Blimey, watch from 1:10 - 1:16, look at the back of the target. Either that hit a sweet spot or that's one mega strong bow!
