What kind of wood is it ?
« on: February 26, 2009, 12:11:38 pm »
I picked this piece of wood up last spring along the HWY where the county was triming some trees.
I'm not real sure on what kind of tree it was. I think it's White Oak but not sure ? The sap wood is really yellow.

Anyone know what it is ?

Thanks ! JohnK

Sorry Pat no leaves at that time of year, as for the bark can't really remember and it was before i had a camera to take a picture of the bark  :'(  The piece i have is 55" long, i'm going to try making a D bow out of it.  ;D

If it is Mulberry, and you know the sapwood is sound, you can leave a ring or two of sapwood on the back. It will make a beautiful contrast with the heartwood. At 55" long you will be best served making a a "D" bow that bends through or at least right up to the handle.

Well the inner looks like elm,but that yellow has me throwed. I just worked down a coffee tree that had all the inner looks of your wood, but it was small and I don't remember it haveing that much yellow under the bark. Perty sure it ain't mulberry,You sure it's not some form of elm?

You'll always know oak by its small black lines marking the grain everywhere. Easiest wood in the world to identify.

slippery elm. All elm that I've worked with has had a yellowish color. That should make a fine bow.
