Pulled another splinter

Ya think rawhide will fix it :D

Thats 2 in a row now, both staves had been stored in the house, I'm thinking the wood
is just to dry.  With the heat running and winters dry air ??? Think I'll go build
snowman instead of bows :P

Yikes! Looks like a tension failure. What kind of wood is it? Hickory or maple? You're probably right about the dry air... same thing around here in the winter.

Maple, and ya it was the back that let go. I had it on the tree and saw the a splinter pop up then kapowwwwwyyyyyy :o

For all you new guys this is why most of us a tree rather than a tillering stick :) I was 10' away and in the clear rather up close and personal :D

just rap that area with sinew,do the other limb to match ;D, and i think it'll work
might even want some raw hide on the back after the sinew just incase ;) ;D

 :o I bet that made a nice explosion. Might be the humidity level. Its 35% in my basement right now. Ive been shooting one of my ipe bows and it seems stiffer and faster than normal. Im wondering if the bows we are making right now will be a little less springy in the spring.

Dana, you made me laugh out loud as I scrolled down to the pic. Sorry about the loss, though.

I actually got a bit paranoid about heat in the house last night, when I was doing some work on the recent Holmegaard and took it in the house to show my wife.

Dana, i really think we should have a mix-n-match box for guys to toss broken bows into.  Then, when it got about half-full, a guy with a broken bow could maybe find a matching limb, or pretty close, and make a take down bow.  I've got a half an osage board bow I could contribute.

If it moves and it aint supposed to use duct tape. If it don't move and its supposed to use wd40 thats all the tools you'll ever need.Ron

I'd put my Money on the Humidity too....it's only about 15 percent here right now.....I ain't working on a Bow till it goes back above 35

Sorry about that,I had some Ash a few years back ,broke 2 or 3 in a row,Now if I have any question on the wood I make a little bow out of the wood,just a sliver and see how it bends,if it holds a pretty good bend I go ahead if not I cook brats with it.We had some hickory like that a couple of years back,White wood will dry rot very quick and easy,or I guess it could be to dry,don't really have that problem down here even in the winter. :)

Pappy this is the same maple that Jesse made his bow from, I have to believe its the humidity, January
was so cold my basement was at 20% humidity :o Oh well it happens to all of us eh

Dana, I think you can save that one...just throw some glue on it and back it with a fine snake skin. I would use the tillering tree again when drawing it though. ;D  Just kidding as I'm sure you're aware! :)
