Yeah, quartz makes good spear points, though it's a bit brittle.  I think flint is easier to work and also stronger.  When I was in Montgomery, AL last year I found some absolutely beautiful milky quartz that was so pure it was like working white glass.  I think the ancients used a lot of it and it's called Tuscaloosa gravel.  It's usually in gravel form (hence the name) and is usually kinda small, but I found egg-sized pebbles that I was able to make points out of.
