may not matter now, but in my experience 3/16 is to much for a backing. all my hickory backing ( i cut myself) are .125" or 1/8". I get hickory boards from wood crafters stores. just look hardwood lumber retailers in google or yahoo.com if you don't use the word "lumber" you get hardwood flooring places.
