Blotchy Rabbit Lungs?
« on: January 12, 2023, 05:56:08 pm »
Has anyone here ever cleaned a snowshoe hare and found that the lungs look blotchy?  I cleaned one earlier today and everything seemed perfectly normal, except that the light pink lungs had dark blood red patches on them.  Does anyone here have first-hand experience with this?

It was rifle killed, and the shot entered at the base of the jaw and exited about through the eye.  Unfortunately, it took some seconds to die, so maybe it inhaled blood, or should I be concerned about disease?

I'd contact the State Wildlife to see if they know or could suggest someone that would. Just out of caution I don't think I'd eat it.

Probably Tularemia, it's also known as rabbit fever.
