sinew backed bow

hello there!!! I just started an elm bow, that I plan to sinew back. its 57 inches tip to tip with 4 inches recurves. the stave has some pin knots, should I keep these as they are, or can I cut them (since I am going to use sinew)? also I only have deer backstrap sinew, is this ok to use or should I use leg sinew? thanks

Your best bet is to keep your back as prestine as possible im my opinion. How big of pin knots are you talking? Whats your draw length your trying to get out of it? Deer Backstrap sinew works fine.

thanks jakesnyder!!! they are not very big, maybe 2 mm at most. I just bought about cutting it because maybe I could lay the sinew flatter against the back...

Sinew is probably sinew so I don't think it matters much what kind you use.  I would, however, suggest that you have at least 2 layers if you are stressing the limbs significantly.  And 3 isn't a bad idea!

If they are proud then I would sand them flat.  Use at least 2 courses

Sand it flat if you are sinewing it.  The back could be violated as all heck IF you do a job sinew job. Hornbows have 'violated'  core backs but they don't break

 I would suggest washing the back sinew if it is greasy or fatty,,

I wash the bow back with Dawn dish soap and rinse with boiling water and wash the sinew with Dawn and warm water.
