String
« on: November 20, 2018, 07:21:37 pm »
I made up a string with B-50 fillers (found some) in the loops. Now I have a bunch of fuzzy ends sticking out. I've seen guys burn them off but I tried it and as soon as I got the flame near the string it started to droop like it was melting. It occurs to me now that it may have been the wax softening but I'd rather check. Is there any danger of damaging the string when burning fuzzy bits off a FF and B-50 string with a candle? I may be a little over cautious here but making strings isn't my favourite thing.

Cut them as short as you can and wax over the area.

Yeah I agree with Pat. They are just padding so I wouldn’t worry much about them.
I made my last 2 strings the same way and had those ends sticking out.  I thought about burning them too but the thought of putting a flame next to my string made me nervous and I didn’t.  But to answer your question, yes I think a flame can damage it, but you should be ok if you didn’t fray any of the working strings.

If you do use a flame make sure it is on the side of your string and not below it.

This surprised me. Not one answer saying a flame was the way to go and yet just about every string making Youtube shows the guy using a lighter. At least on serving. I'll go with you guys although I'm having trouble finding something sharp enough to cut the FF tags. Maybe some of my wifes $300 hairdressing scissors ;D ;D

For FF a regular fiskars scissors won't cut it but willl cut artificial sinew and B50.I use a really sharp blade on my pocket knife for that FF stuff.
