And it starts.....
« on: February 14, 2018, 06:14:28 pm »
Bought a draw knife and started removing bark today. I'm not sure how clean it needs to be at this stage. I was trying to be cautious about getting into the stave?

Also not sure what to do with the knots right now?

Good looking stave. I do things VERY different from everyone else here so keep this advice in mind. On whitewood like that stave, you want the back to be the wood under the bark. A sharp knife will dig into the wood without care, so I use a dull one to remove bark. I dont want the knife to catch the wood on the back at all. Around the knots, use care, keep them intact just remove the bark. Then lay the bow profile out keeping the knots far from the edge as possible, or better, out of the bow all togeather.  The close to the handle they are and centerline of the limb the better.

Be very patient removing that bark. Rarely, more likely never,  will you have a slick smooth back. There will be ridges, valleys, undulations, humps, etc under the bark and it’s easy to get carried away and slice right through a ridge on the back. I’m excited for you! Good luck and post a lot as you go.

I have put my shagbark hickory staves in a hot steamy shower for 30 minutes, flipping halfway through. The bark will pop off just as if it were cut late summer. Then I just let them dry real good.

Get close with your drawknife and then go to a scraper. At least that I what I've done in the past. Jawge
