Lots of Soapstone
« on: September 19, 2017, 11:44:05 am »
Mostly for the newer folks. I think I have posted most of
these items before but quite awhile ago. My carvings are from
Nelson Co. VA, The raw stone is from North Carolina.

Nice!  May have to get some of that stone!  From a quarry, or private stock?

Thanks Zuma, that top picture looks like the stuff I made my peace pipe out of. Very soft and easy to work, not very strong though.
Man you nailed that Corona bottle cap, it looks like the real thing. ;). Seriously I really like the tooth, at least I believe that's what it is. Is it suppose to be a prehistoric shark? Or maybe some type of dinosaur? Sorry I don't know my fossils like I should but I do like them.

From what I understand the weathered surface soapstone is softer than the lenses below
Lots of experience with the caps and how to vary the colors later in the night time lol
The tooth could have belonged to a Megladon shark 5 million years ago. It was much
 better looking than the photo

very nice work Zman! We got soapstone around here too! Some is definitely better than other bits.  Traditionally was used for beads and bowls.

I think the Maya chief is my favorite.

I really like that one to Jeff. I remember when you posted that ram for the first time Zuma. I really like the ram to. Oh and the tooth to. Oh heck Zuma that's just a lot of nice soapstone.

Real nice, Zuma, like the maya chief as well.  The ram is very good, we've seen a couple that size just up the canyon a ways!  You mentioned you use a slab to cook on, so I would assume it has a good heat transfer quotient, but not an insulator quotient.  My wife needs a good, solid insulator for her jewelry work, and my rock knowledge went away somewhere.  Does anyone have a suggestion?  Also, need a source for some soapstone, and some info on where to find it "wild".  Nice shark tooth, probably is a megaladon.  Thanks,
Hawkdancer
