Recurve tip overlays
« on: June 06, 2017, 11:55:30 am »
;D ;D I little brain teaser. If I put tall overlays on a recurve does that add to the amount of recurve or is it where the string leaves the belly that counts?

I kinda do that with my static tips D.C. I think it does but I'm know expert on this stuff. I know it raises my brace height with the same string. Looking forward to seeing what others say.

I usually try to solve these things in my head by taking things to extremes. If you put on 3" tall overlays(and they stayed on) and still had the string leave the belly at the same place I guess the bow would be a bit longer at full draw and it would probably be bent more. I dunno. back to steaming experiments ;)

Unlike most that bevel the back down to add tip overlays I add the overlay to the back and bring the belly up towards the tip. This makes the tips look like they have been reflexed and I assume they actually are.

The Flat Bow book shows this technique and the BBs also shows a similar style.

After pondering this all morning I'm going to go with "where the string leaves the belly". I thin PatB saying that he curves the belly up was the thought that did it.

This one i just started roughing out but you can see i flattened the back and then bring the belly too the tip, it does add a little recurve
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

bring the belly up towards the tip.

I meant that the overlay is the part that made the difference.

I agree that overlays add reflex . Not much but if it makes up for 1/2 inch of set it's worth it to me. Also thin those tips to utalize that added overlay and I think you have a winner. My two cents. Arvin :BB

I do like Pat B and think it adds a little reflex, but I don't do it for that reason, but as Arvin said every little bit helps I suppose. I do it because I am old school and don't want to violate the back by cutting it in. :)
