5 piece questions
« on: March 18, 2017, 12:35:40 pm »
Afternoon everyone.
If you were building a 5 piece using v-splices, would you have to use sinew to strengthen the splices? Also, for a non-backed bow, what would be the shortest length for the limbs on a 28" draw with 6"hooks. I figured on 60" overall length, less 18" for the handle and hooks, leaves 24" for each limb, including the handle splice. Am I too far out? Finally, how bad an idea is it to go without sinewing the bow?

What are you trying to build? It needs backed if you are going to have 4 splices but you can hard back it instead of sinew imo
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

I'm going to harvest some gorse, but, it only comes in short lengths so before I cut it I want to make sure I cut pieces that will actually be of use.

What is a 5 piece bow? I'm imagining the handle spliced and then something like siyhas spliced on the tips, but then that's still only three splices.

Your spot on, 2 sijahs, 2 limbs, 1 handle; 5 pieces, 4 splices though

Seperate handle piece, 2 limbs, and 2 tip pieces

Are you not wanting to sinew it, you could use a thin hard backer

Sorry for my inquiries. So how does the handle piece work? do you have the splice be in the beginnings of the fade so it's hardly working? I just can't imagine a splice in any part that's working.

Keep in mind that typical multi-piece bows also have layers covering the splices on the belly.
