FF Strand Count for 100#?
« on: January 12, 2017, 11:55:31 am »
Hello everyone,

I'm making an osage selfbow with self nocks that are cut into the bow with no overlays.  I want to shoot a FF string, but I don't want the string to cut through the nocks.  How many strands do you think I would need for a 100# draw weight and no tip overlays so that the string won't cut through?  I don't really care if the string is on the thicker side, as long as it will not cut through the nocks.  I don't want to use tip overlays, as it doesn't seem "natural" enough for me.  I like the natural look of self nocks.

Thanks!

I just made a 100# osage warbow with self nocks for tillering. I used 18 strands of D97 without any cutting issue. That was even when I was trying to push the stave to make a 150# bow, which it didn't want to. It even made the string stretch about 1.5" on bracing, which I've never had d97 do once broke in. But it didn't cut into te wood.

Put extra strands in the loops...(you can use Dacron 50 for the extra strands, also)

FF - which sort do you mean?
FF+ from Brownell, Spectra from BCY (652) or....?
All new materials are a little diffrent in material and in thickness.
Normally with 100lbs you are more as save with 14 or 16 strands (of FF+ and Spectra) + 4-6 extra strands in the loops.

if you like the natural primitive like you said, you should go with a linnen string.

If using modern material I would go with BCY 452  10 or 12 strands, padded loops.

I've got FF+ for string.  IF I didn't pad the loops, how many strands could I get away with? 18?

Yes.

But I recommend the padded loops, cause since more then 10 jears I have no problems with FF and selfnocks (and Ialways use padded loops). The string material I like most is BCY 8125.
