Alright, so this question will completely show my inexperience and general lack of knowledge but if you don't ask stoopid questions you don learn nuffin .  What is the difference between a light or middle-weight ELB and a D-bow - is it just a question of length and this 5:8 ratio thing??

It's more a matter of scale. Heavier bows tend to be thicker and longer.
The 5:8 is pretty much irrelevant as few ELBs are anywhere near that, much nearer 6:8 or 7:8
The warbows tend to be more squareish or roundish in section or like an inflated rectangle. Lighter bows especially Victorian ones tend to be a more semicircular belly and stiffer in the grip.

Are you talkin D belly or D bow? A D belly has been explained here, some people refer to bend through the handle straight limbed bows as D bows.

What Wizardgoat said, the term D-bow is used a little too loosely sometimes. Do we mean a D shape in full length side profile, or a D shaped limb cross section?

D bow refers to the type of tiller which is a slightly bending handle and elliptical tiller.
D cross section refers to the belly shape which is rounded.

Yes you can eliptically tiller a D shaped cross sectioned limb bow if you want.Long narrow osage bows shoot nicely for me that way.
