Hickory backed hickory with flipped tips
« on: March 09, 2016, 07:16:11 pm »
Hey everybody,
This is my latest shooter. It came after 2 other attempt at the same bow -
1st attempt - static recurve with 3" glued in reflex- so about 6" net reflex to start. Well, I got fooled by the reflex monster and it ended up way under weight. Havnt bother finishing it.
2nd attempt -  same design, made sure to brace it early, but unfortunately was not careful enough tillering and ended up with some chrysalling on the top limb.
3rd attempt - success! (30 arrows so far) Was not as aggressive with the statics and opted for a mildly flipped tip. 3" perry reflex, and I also gave it a heat treatment before gluing (same as the others) and tillered caaarefully ;)
Stats are 62" ntn, 60#@26, 1 3/4" wide. Hickory backed hickory.  All of these attempts were glued with resorcinol (1st time doing that with lam bows) and I game them a heat treatment before the glue up. (Had to reflatten the back after the heat treatment)
Now I'm out of hickory :)
I'll post some finished pics when it's done if it survives a few hundred arrows.

Good job way to hang in there, sometimes thats what it takes. you didn't fail those other times you just learned a couple ways not to build a bow😀
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

Looks great!  I like the heartwood/sapwood contrast.  Nice work!

Very pretty curve, and the sideways colors are a unique look.
I love it when a plan B comes together....

Thanks everyone!  I just happened to have a backing strip with the same sapwood/heartwood pattern as the belly lam, so it all worked out.

Good looking bow.
