What type of tree is this ?
« on: May 05, 2015, 11:17:47 am »
Fellas, I came across a small stand of these bushy trees, never seen any before. I am wondering if it is either thorn berry    or   buckthorn perhaps? it has clusters of small reddish berries dried on last years stems. The small branchs look like in the pics, but the tree has sort of smooth silvery bark and the "trees are only about 2" in diameter.

Thanks for any help

Looks like rose to me. Will you take a pic of the plant?

Were the berries hard like tiny crabapples ?  It looks like some species of rose.  Especially the thorns and buds. Josh

Multiflora rose, this was another of our countries invasive species snafus. It was introduced and enthusiastically promoted as a natural fence in the 50s. My dad planted it and found it spread so quickly that a foot wide fence became 10 ft and expanding in short order. To get rid of it he had to dig it up roots and all, a huge task.

I have heard that it makes good arrows.  I just cut a bunch of very straight shoots of rose.  Knocked off the thorns with my knife and letting them dry.  Will remove the bark later and give them a try.

In the winter when deer hunting I enjoy  chewing the rose hips and sucking the flavor from them, the flesh is thin  and I will just spit the seeds. Makes a great tea also.
Extremely high in Vitamin C, don't over do it and if you make tea strain it thru a coffee filter.  The berries have a fine hairy fiber in them that will irritate the intestine and you will regret over doing it.
