Dye under WDB skins...
« on: August 06, 2014, 09:00:47 pm »
Ok, I've seen people (Gordon and I believe Pearl Drums) dye the back of a bow before putting on WDB skins. I did this on my last bow but, when I put the TBIII on for the skins, it started making the dye run. Has anyone else had this issue? The bow had a layer of TBIII over sinew before I dyed it, then I sized with TBIII like normal. Maybe I didn't let the dye set long enough? Any suggestions?

I've used dyes and acrylic paint....no problems with either using TB3 after letting the surface "cure" real well..... waited a week or so before adding the glue and skins..... just in my experience.

dyed the back of this before applying the skins, used an alcohol based dye with no problems

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Like the looks of wood peeking through the skins.

I've never died a bow under skins. Never saw the need.

No real need ,just makes the pattern stand out better especially on really light wood or really thin skins and on a WDB it will   make the white diamond stand out if it is dark underneath the skin much better other than that no real reason,if it's snake skin it cool in my book either way.  ;) :) :)

Clint was close, it is birchwood Casey cherry , I thought it was alcohol base but it's water based

Tried again with the same results. Let the dye set up for a day, but the TBIII made the dye run a little. Next time I'll either skip the dye all together or try hide glue instead.
